I’m not a big gift-giver at Christmas. There are a few reasons for that, but mostly because I don’t think giving needs to be reserved for or focused on a single day.
“Special” days occur a\virtually continuously throughout the year, whether they be religious or otherwise, blurring from one to the next, and each forgotten within days of its passing.
Christmas – at least in our society – is different only in that the commercialisation and hype leading up to it begins earlier and earlier every year. I find it incredibly sad. Heart-breaking, even. For so many people, Christmas is a time of loss and grief and hardship. The never-ending message of celebrate loved ones by spending constantly shoved down our throats consistently ignores this.
But … what if we treated every day as if it was Christmas? What if, every time we saw someone, we behaved as if it was their birthday? What if we spent every day of our lives celebrating each other? Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely to happen? Not in the foreseeable future.
But can you imagine if we gave something meaningful every day? (and don’t go throwing affordability at me – I’m not talking about spending money on gifts, I’m talking giving of ourselves and in a meaningful way).
What are the possible consequences of doing this? Would it lead to a loss of power of the almighty dollar-driven sales machine? Would it become boring and lead to the opposite? Would it push back the tide of greed that seems to be washing over the planet at the moment?
I’d love to find out, so will continue to celebrate everyone I meet each day, and give what I can and what will be accepted.
May you live your life as you choose, in peace 🖤❤️🤍
